I will be doing video design for The People’s Light & Theatre presents The Secret of Sherlock Holmes. I will be projecting different scenes on three panels that move upstage and downstage during the show. The imagery will be black and white and in the style of a Doré etching.
Today we had the Design Presentations and now I am even more excited for the show to open! So mark your calendars, show opens on July 9 at 8:00 p.m. and runs all the way through July into August. You can buy tickets through The People’s Light & Theater website.

I will be working with Daniele Strawmyre, Artistic Director of readySetGO, a multimedia performance company specializing in immersive and interactive performance installations. I will be designing visuals and incorporating realtime video for a performance installation she is developing inspired by Japanese ghost stories. It is set to premiere at this year’s Philadelphia Live Arts Festival.

Sorry I haven’t posted anything all summer – I can’t believe its just about over! It seems like we were just in Maine for the 4th of July. This year our friends came up with us to experience a true Maine vacation! We ate lobster (twice) and Gifford’s Ice Cream (every night). Activities included waterskiing everyday, white water rafting, kayaking, hiking, as well as cliff jumping =)
This summer I was also a Teaching Artist at Montgomery Theater for the Young Actor’s Workshop Mixed Media Week. The students had a week to write a play, perform in their play, and create multimedia content to be projected during their play. This is the first year that Montgomery Theater has ever done a Mixed Media Week; fortunately, the students plays were so successful that there is plans to continue the class in the Fall, Spring and even next Summer! If you are interested in seeing the kids’ performances, head on over to youtube!
I also was involved with the 2009 Siggraph Conference as an XSV (Ex Student Volunteer). I worked as a project manager on the Encounter Siggraph SCVNGR Hunt, an interactive SMS game developed by SCVNGR. I was excited that the conference was held in (the very hot) New Orleans because I had never been there before. During my free time I went to Bourbon Street, listen to a lot of awesome live music and even went on a Paddle Wheeler dinner/jazz cruise!
This summer I have also been doing some freelance work for an awesome projection company in Philadelphia. Klip Collective is a video installation company that can transform any space into an immersive visual experience. Here are two projects I edited for Klip this summer that showcase what they do: W Fort Lauderdale & Infiniti
I don’t have too much in the works for Fall, but I’m hoping some opportunities will come around. I will be sure to keep you posted

Its been awhile since I posted anything so this post will be an update on my work as well as life…
The start of 2009 has been busy, but its a good busy. January I was the video designer for Impressions of Pelleas, an opera performed by The Curtis Institute of Music. Right after finishing Pelleas, I did a project for Aaron Levy, one of the Board of Directors for Slought Foundation. I designed an interactive presentation and map for one of their exhibitions, Into the Open, Positioning Practice. The Interactive Map is on the Exhibition’s website. Right after finishing the project for Slought, I worked in NYC for 2 weeks as a projection assistant for Columbia University’s Young Company’s rendition of Romeo & Juliet. We designed imagery as well as incorporated 3 live cameras. Recently, I was in NYC filling in for the associate projection designer for the new Broadway show Rock of Ages. The show is really fun and features hit music from the 80s.
As for life, I feel really good about all the work I’ve been doing so far this year. Next month Mark and I will be going to Paris for nine days! We are both really excited especially because neither of us have ever been there. I will be sure to post about that trip when we get back.
P.S. Buckley and turtle say hi!

For the past couple months I’ve been contacting theater designers like a fiend trying to find possible work. Last month I contacted Philadelphia-based scenic and projection designer, Matt Saunders. He told me he was the scenic designer for an upcoming project at The Curtis Institute of Music and asked if I would be the video designer for the show!
It is an English opera called “Impressions of Pelléas” and contains four scenes that include projection. It will only run for about a week (Feb 10 – 15). You can buy tickets online through the Curtis site.

You’ll never believe what happened to me this week-
It all started when one of my professors put me in contact with a friend of his from high school, Jodi Kaplan. Jodi, received her M.F.A in Film from Columbia and owns a dance booking company. I met with her last week and she asked me if I was interested in editing footage for dance photographer, Lois Greenfield! The footage was for an upcoming project called “Projected,” a dance performance that will project Lois’s images on dancers and fabric. The short film would be on display in a theater lobby in China during the time that the Olympics were going on. Naturally, I said yes- this would be a great opportunity for me! Since I would be going between my internship and this project, Jodi arranged for me to stay in a hostel for the week.
During the week I worked side by side with Lois in her studio editing the footage. She is an extremely nice woman and was a pleasure to work with. I worked really hard on the project and I’m so proud of the final piece. Lois and Jodi were impressed with my work and asked me to work on the project with them in the fall as they create the performance!

The first preview for Fela! is fast approaching. The show is amazing and I strongly recommend you see it. Make sure to check out the show’s website and buy tickets!

My internship in NYC is just over half-way done and boy has it been an awesome experience thus far! The two main shows I’m helping with are Fela! Music is the Weapon (directed by Bill T. Jones) and 9 to 5 (music by Dolly Parton). I spent the month of June in the studio conducting research and building content for both shows (as well as helping out with a couple smaller shows). Now, we spend most days in the theater (37 Arts) finishing content and teching Fela. In between working on Fela I am able to observe Bill at work (which is very interesting). I was even introduced to Bill by Peter and got to shake is hand!
More importantly is that I’ve learned a lot from this experience. The great thing about being an intern is that everyone knows you are there to learn so they are more then willing to answer any of my questions. From simple After Effects questions to something more in depth like how a concept is presented to a client. In the theater, I am able to see the back-end process of setting the equipment up and programing the projectors.
I’ve been keeping a video blog about the experience so feel free to check it regularly.
