While testing in the theater last term it was decided that the scene that incorporates the DICE program would be better if the audience could see the live dancer and her projected image at the same time (instead of having the three dancers hold hands and the one representing technology stand behind a piece of cyc). Since I got to have rehearsal in Mandell this weekend, I thought I would take the opportunity to try some options. I came up with three possibilities more »

After countless hours of research and having my mom help me with proofreading (thanks Mom), my thesis proposal has finally been approved by my committee members. I guess that’s why they say, “the third time’s a charm.”

This week we did some preliminary testing of the different sections in the theater. We answered some of my questions as well as created new questions.
The bulk of the day was spent testing the projectors (front and rear). We determined that rear projection would not be in my piece after all. The dimensions of the stage did not go deep enough for us to get a big enough image. Also, the image itself wasn’t very bright when it came through the rear projection screen. Instead we will be using the 1500 luma projector at the back of the house onto the video screen. Although the image isn’t as big as the stage, it is pretty darn close (especially when we close the midstage traveler a little to cover the sides of the video screen). more »

I will be doing some tests for my thesis in Mandell Theater November 27 & 29. Monday will be my day for testing and Wednesday will the engineers’ day for testing.
Monday-
Rear projection vs. front projection. How big of an image can I get with both? How bright does the image look? What surface will I be projecting on?
Projection onto fabric. What colors do I want to use? What textures do I like?
Wednesday-
Infrared test. Can the video camera see the LED lights? At what light levels can the camera see the LED lights? Can the camera read the LED lights on a choreographed dancer?
Stay tune to answers to these questions and more after the testing dates.

I met the team of senior engineering students who will be creating the “Text Rain” simulation for the beginning of my piece. The system will have to track the dancer at approximately 30Hz aggregate rate and 5cm precision, be completely wirelessly operated, and integrated into a data collection system. We plan on testing technologies such as video tracking, ultrasound, IEEE 802.11, and wireless sensor networks. more »

The Summer term came and went like there was no tomorrow! I got a lot of prep work done for my thesis. I made connections with a fabric company and dance company in Germany! I made connections with professors from different departments on Drexel’s campus. I also completed a rough previz more »

Starting this Fall I will start working on my thesis full force! I started dancing when I came to Drexel as something to do to keep active. I ended up really enjoying it and became a part of the Dance Ensemble about 2 years ago. I decided last spring that I wanted to do a thesis that involved dance. I talked with the Dance Program Director (also my dance teacher) about the idea. She was very excited and told me that the piece could be performed at the Spring concert (June 2007)!! This was great- more »
