I just got back from the ACM SIGGRAPH Conference held in B-utiful San Diego where I was a Student Volunteer for the last year (since I’m no longer a student). The conference was pretty cool- I made sure to check out all of the Digital Performances, which I didn’t think were as good as last year. There was a lot of audio performances and only a few dance performances.
At the end of the week, we went to the San Diego Zoo where we saw Pandas, Kolas, otters, a baby giraffe, to name a few.

I just got back from my vacation in Maine. We had a great week- we climbed up the Beehive at Acadia National Park, went white water rafting down the Penobscott, saw Coos Canyon, hiked up to Angel Falls (the tallest waterfall in Maine), and off course water-skied! But best of all we saw not one but TWO Moose hanging out on the side of the road- a mama and her baby. Head over to flickr to see some of the pictures from the trip.

I just found out today that I was accepted to be a Student Volunteer for the 2007 ACM SIGGRAPH Conference in San Diego, CA!!! I’m so excited because I’ve never been to San Diego before; in fact the last time I was on the West Coast was for the 2005 ACM SIGGRAPH Conference in Los Angeles.

I just got back from my Spring Break vacation- a 7 day Western Caribbean cruise through Royal Caribbean. Highlights including walking Duval Street and eating at Margaritaville in Key West, sunbathing on the white sands of Seven Mile Beach in Grand Cayman, and exploring Mayan ruins on a jungle hike in Cozumel, Mexico. Check out some pictures from the trip.

So my trip to Ireland was way too short (especially since there was about 10 hours of traveling each way). I was able to get some good shopping and site-seeing done on Friday and Saturday (see picture below of Mark and me at Dublin Castle). The trip concluded with the Comhaltas xmas party. It was amazing- there was traditional Irish food, drink, music, and dancing all night long.

It’s official- I am officially going to Ireland with Mark and Happy Cog Dec. 6-10. This will be foreign country #2 for me (#1 being Iceland last Spring Break). Stay tune for more details when I return.

So I’m back in Philly again after my weekend in Pittsburgh for the Technology in the Arts Conference at Carnegie Mellon.
My sister and I left Philadelphia at 4 AM Friday morning and drove up there in torrential downpours with only 2 hours of sleep. Needless to say we stopped at about every rest stop along the way for coffee, soda, and snacks. But, we made good time and arrived around 10 am.
The conference was not what I expected at all. First of all I was probably the youngest person there (which I guess made me feel good since it was my 22nd birthday this weekend and I’m starting to feel old). And second, the conferece wasn’t about collaboration of arts and technolgoy the way I envisioned it (ya know, like what I’m doing for my thesis). It was about how non-profit organizations in the arts can use things like websites, blogs, content management systems, etc. *Wamp Wamp
On a positive note, I met some cool people and I realized that a career in non-profit may be something I want to consider after graduation. Whenever people ask me what I want to do after I graduate I tell them I have no idea. I just can’t imagine doing all this work for my thesis and then just dropping everything in June. Maybe this is an option I can consider if I want to still work with dance and technology???

I will be attending the Technology in the Arts Conference Oct 20-21 (my birthday weekend) in Pittsburgh, PA at Carnegie Melon University. I recieved a travel scholarship to cover the cost of my registration and hotel. I’m really looking forward to the conference because I think there will be a lot of people I can talk to about my thesis. I will let you know how it goes at the end of October.

After 12 hours of traveling, I am back in Philadelphia. Last week I was in Boston for the SIGGRAPH Conference. Despite the fact that I had to work three 10 hour days, I ended up seeing a few things that interested me.
I saw 4 interactive dance performances. All the pieces had elements that I want to include in my piece; however, as I was watching them, I kept thinking to myself, “That’s great that the dancer can interact with this text from a poem, but WHY?” With my piece I hope to be able to use the technology to help get my concept across better rather then just using technology because it looks cool.
Other notable events that week: I got my teapot from the Pixar booth and went to the Red Sox game. The Sox lost (Yanks are ahead now), but I got on TV!!

Tell everybody I’m on my way, I’m on my way to SIGGRAPH! I will be a Student Volunteer for the second year in a row at SIGGRAPH. This year it is being held in Boston (Go Sox!). I’ll let you know how it was when I get back.
