My internship in NYC is just over half-way done and boy has it been an awesome experience thus far! The two main shows I’m helping with are Fela! Music is the Weapon (directed by Bill T. Jones) and 9 to 5 (music by Dolly Parton). I spent the month of June in the studio conducting research and building content for both shows (as well as helping out with a couple smaller shows). Now, we spend most days in the theater (37 Arts) finishing content and teching Fela. In between working on Fela I am able to observe Bill at work (which is very interesting). I was even introduced to Bill by Peter and got to shake is hand!
More importantly is that I’ve learned a lot from this experience. The great thing about being an intern is that everyone knows you are there to learn so they are more then willing to answer any of my questions. From simple After Effects questions to something more in depth like how a concept is presented to a client. In the theater, I am able to see the back-end process of setting the equipment up and programing the projectors.
I’ve been keeping a video blog about the experience so feel free to check it regularly.

My summer continues to get better and better as more and more opportunities keep popping up. I received notice today that my poster submission for the Student Research Competition at the 2008 SIGGRAPH Conference was accepted! Los Angeles, here I come (again).

This June I will be interning in New York City for projection artist, Peter Nigrini, on a new musical by Bill T. Jones. The musical will have video projected with several different projectors. The internship will be an excellent opportunity for me to see a professional company’s process of integrating media and theater. My responsibilities will include video research, editing, as well as working in the theater. Unfortunately, I can’t take a leave of absence from ASI so I had to put my two weeks notice in. I am very excited though and I feel like this is a an opportunity I can’t pass up. I will keep you updated over the summer on how the project is going.

I was in New York this week for the ASI Show! New York. I helped with the multimedia design for a party hosted for our clients. The party was Frank Sinatra theme so I created a 1940s nightclub atmosphere by projecting life-size archival video of Ol’ Blue Eyes performing on stage. In between each act, was a Flash animation about the company’s product. We even had video projected of Tim Andrews, the president & CEO of ASI, introducing Frank as if they were on the same stage together. The room was decorated like a restaurant/bar with movie-size posters of the product hanging on the wall illuminated with spotlights. Check out the pictures on flickr.

This past weekend we adopted a baby turtle we named Puddles from “The Turtle Man” outside Wendy’s on 15th and Chestnut. We had no idea what we were getting ourselves into- I thought raising a turtle was as simple as raising a fish. Boy was I wrong…
Puddles cost 10 bucks and came in a little plastic container with a plastic palm tree (which I learned later through this site is illegal). We decided to go to Petco to get him a bigger tank (you know like a 10 gallon or something). When we got to the store the employee showed us the tank we would need- It was a 20L tank (about 3 feet long x 1 foot deep)! On top of the tank, we also had to buy a special light! When everything was said and done, we ended up spending $200 for a turtle that only cost $10.
We were a little overwhelmed by everything- where the hell were we going to put this giant tank we just bought in our tiny apartment? We drove home, set everything up, and introduced Puddles to his new home. He seemed to be a lot happier (probably because we were raising him correctly now).
Despite the initial shock of it all, we’ve really taken to Puddles. I know I’m his mom and all, but I most say, he’s the cutest thing on four legs! Mark even set up a webcam for us to watch his every move!!

I will be working with Diane Sharp-Nachsin, the Artistic Director of SHARP Dance Company, on an upcoming piece. I will be creating visuals that will be projected on stage behind the dancers. The piece will premier at the 2008 Philly Fringe Festival in September.

If you haven’t been to visit in awhile, I’ve made a couple updates to the site. My resume and bio have been updated (many thanks to Erin Rudy for the great photographs). I’ve also converted all of the Quicktime videos on this site into Flash video – so you shouldn’t have to wait as long for things to download anymore =)

Once again, I submitted my thesis to the ACM SIGGRAPH conference, which will be held in Los Angeles this summer. This time, however, I was able to submit the video of the performance along with my one-page abstract. I should hear back from the judges sometime in May so keep your fingers crossed for me.
