This week we did some preliminary testing of the different sections in the theater. We answered some of my questions as well as created new questions.
The bulk of the day was spent testing the projectors (front and rear). We determined that rear projection would not be in my piece after all. The dimensions of the stage did not go deep enough for us to get a big enough image. Also, the image itself wasn’t very bright when it came through the rear projection screen. Instead we will be using the 1500 luma projector at the back of the house onto the video screen. Although the image isn’t as big as the stage, it is pretty darn close (especially when we close the midstage traveler a little to cover the sides of the video screen). more »

I will be doing some tests for my thesis in Mandell Theater November 27 & 29. Monday will be my day for testing and Wednesday will the engineers’ day for testing.
Monday-
Rear projection vs. front projection. How big of an image can I get with both? How bright does the image look? What surface will I be projecting on?
Projection onto fabric. What colors do I want to use? What textures do I like?
Wednesday-
Infrared test. Can the video camera see the LED lights? At what light levels can the camera see the LED lights? Can the camera read the LED lights on a choreographed dancer?
Stay tune to answers to these questions and more after the testing dates.
